WINE WEDNESDAY: 2011 Cousino Macul Cabernet Sauvignon, Antiguas Reservas 150 150 David Rosengarten

2011 Cousino Macul Cabernet Sauvignon, Antiguas Reservas, Maipo Valley, ChileI0005437_CousinoMacul_AntiguasRsvsCab ($12)

You may not think Chilean Cabernet is my kind of thing…but sometimes it is! Even when the wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, as this one is. Lovely, glowing medium garnet—like it’s inner-lit! Pretty nose that combines plummy-cherry-like fresh fruit, with a touch of Port-y ripeness. One of the nicer sweet-attack Cabernets you’ll find in the market. The initial rush of sweet fruit turns drier in mid-palate; the flavors that really surge are the ripe ones, all kinds of dried fruits, such as cherries and raisins. A little chocolate works its way in as well. The main event is followed by a rich, velvety, surprisingly soft finish.

Excellent wine for a roast of venison, particularly if it’s cooked past rare!
